STRESS AND METABOLISM –  How, When and What to do?

Since today we are going to be talking about stress and its relationship with metabolism, I want you to understand why and how it leads to multiple damage to your body…

Also towards the end we are going to talk about different ways to deal with stress and the problems that it causes!

Remember how I always say that it’s never just a healthy body and healthy diet? Instead, It’s always HEALTHY MIND, BODY and SOUL

Here’s why……..

At any given time, there are millions of chemical reactions taking place in our cells — like digesting and assimilating nutrients, converting those nutrients into energy, and eliminating the rest as waste. The sum total of all these chemical reactions is known as metabolism

When we are in balance on every level — physical, emotional, mental and spiritual — our metabolism is in peak form, in turn utilizing calories in the most efficient way possible. On the contrary, whenever we are emotionally disturbed or stressed, on any or all of these levels, our metabolism is compromised. We store calories as fat instead of burning them as energy and we therefore need excess calories to accomplish the same metabolic functions. Thus our bodies going in storage mode…

When you are stressed, you end up with elevated stress hormones, especially Cortisol. During stress Cortisol can easily take over different hormones in the body. Cortisol affects metabolism by how glucose is formed. Stress-related weight gain can be due to a combination of low physical activity and increased caloric intake.

Being stressed is one of the main hazards of a healthy metabolism. How many times have you started a diet and done pretty well until some stressful event occurs. When the body faces any kind of stress- be it a simple traffic jam or a bad day, – it responds by dumping anti-stress (adrenal) hormones into the body.

The most common is norepinephrine. This is a good thing except when your norepinephrine reserve is depleted, your body’s metabolism screeches to a halt – or at least slows way down. What’s worse, when the norepinephrine levels are low, insulin, the hunger hormone, pours in. In other words, to our brain, spiritual, emotional and mental hunger equals physical hunger. By making choices to change our conscious thoughts, we can change our subconscious inclinations.

Stress is notorious for causing comfort-food cravings and depleting the willpower you need to make healthy choices, but it can do a whole lot of metabolic damage even if you never cave to the sugar demons. Stress creates a metabolic havoc by reducing the total number of calories that you burn in a day, impairing blood sugar control, and affecting insulin, testosterone, and thyroid hormones and many other imbalances….

In short all these things are leading you to Lifestyle Disorders like Obesity, Diabetes, Hypertension and many more diseases….

Coming to the most important aspect of this article….

  2. Another important topic covered gracefully by Dr Rohini.

It is really very true and scientifically proven that mental stress, depression, anxiety all these things affect your stomach and metabolism.

Most of the people dont even understand that they are going through these mental stress.

Some tips to understand that your state of mind isn’t good.

    1) You dont feel hungry at all.
    2) You feel hungry, but you don’t feel like eating anything.
    3) You do a lot of emotional eating, in a way you try to punish yourself by eating all unhealthy stuff.
    4) You stay awake for longer at nights.
    5) Even when you try to sleep, your brain factory doesn’t shut and you keep overthinking stuff and hence no sound sleep.
    6) You feel scared about something you don’t understand or you really dont know (anxiety)
    7) When you start feeling the universe is against you planing some conspiracy for you.
    8) When you dont feel happy for someone else, instead you feel sad for yourself.

These are very comman feelings everyone gets at some point of time in life.

    How to deal with it?

Fill in your mind with tons of positivity. Train your brain to see only positive things even in a negative situation. Please understand, that you will not always get everything you wish in the same way you think. Its a universal fact for everyone. So why not be more accepting about it? Most of the problem you face are because you don’t know how to handle sundden changes in life. They maybe good, or they maybe bad but you have to accept it sooner or later, right? So why cant it be sooner the better?

The trick is, dont give those demons entry into your brains. Accept the situation and act to rectify it. It will automatically kill those demons.
You are responsible for your mental health. Keep your mental health upto 100% even if it fuctuates, it should not go below 90%. And keep it password protected. Only you can decide when you wanna be sad.

Thanks Dr Rohini for coming up with this wonderful topic and writting it so wonderfully.
